Commentary for August 9th, 2003.

No porn for you! It was some interesting reading today in the Chicago Tribune. The article was talking about how John Ashcroft has made it his personal goal to track down and arrest pornographers. Well, I see two problems with this.

1)If it is non-child porn performed by consenting adults, who cares?

2)Aren’t there about a million other things the government should worry about first?

Things like the anthrax mailer, or terrorists entering our borders undetected?

I really don’t care what kind of pornography you like, as long as it does not harm children or animals. People like some sick things, but we rarely act on our darkest fantasies. Isn’t it healthier that the people who want to view disturbing (but fake) pornography watch it rather than actually act upon their desires? I think it is a terrible waste of resources when the individuals who killed more than 3000 people like you and me are still free! I wound rather not have to worry about death in the mail or buildings collapsing than worry about if some ADULT wants to watch simulated rape between PAID CONSENTING ADULTS.I still remember when Ashcroft spent thousand of taxpayer dollars to cover some exposed classical (nude) statues. Think of the thousands used for than could have been used to feed needy school children and not covering a representation of a beautiful thing, the human body.

Well, enough of that. Hope this rant made you think.

The future of computing.

Commentary for June 6th, 2003.

The future of computing.

Right now I am plunking at my Zaurus, writing on my free time a work, thinking about how far computers have come. I am not even thirty yet, but I have seen the evolution of computers from eight bit machines with 64K of RAM, to the beasts you can get now that are 3000 times faster, with 4000 times more memory. Yet, the irony is that today’s machines don’t do all that much more productive work that than the computers of my childhood. We still use most of our computing time to create paper, documents, play games, and a few other basic tasks.I think the computer industry needs to step back and re-evaluate what people really need.

Cheap, reliable, easy to use computers to do the mundane tasks that computers have always done with a few of the extras needed to make the computer more fun.A case in point are my in-laws. My wife and I build our own computers, so when they needed a computer, we built them one. Sadly, we actually lost money just in the parts, not to mention providing lifetime technical support. It cost too much for us to build, and the ‘lowest’ machine you can build now is till about 10 times more computer than they will ever need.We need a $200, easy to use computer. They don’t make it.Why?

1) There is little profit in selling a $200 computer (Just ask Handspring and e-machines about that).

2) The cost of Windows licensing with useful applications is much more than the computer is worth.

The closest thing we have to the perfect machine are the Linux loaded machines at Walmart. It avoids the problems of licensing, and any low markup or loss can easily be absorbed by Walmart.

Can they make 200 computers and make a profit? Sure they can, if they put older, but more robust parts inside. Who needs 2Ghz to write an e-mail? Build a 800Mhz machine, with integrated everything, and you can do it. If I had the capital, I would do it right now, a computer for the masses. Everyone deserves a computer of their own, and they should not have to rely on the questionable handouts from a company that shall remain nameless. It won’t solve world hunger, but it will go a long way to computing equality.

That is all,

David N.

Abandoning the charade

It looks likes Bush abandoning his charade of looking for U.N. appoval for his insane little war. Well, at least he will just get it over with. Like Father, like son, I hope it is all over in 2 years.

Commentary for March 9th, 2003.

Commentary for March 9th, 2003.

Today is my Wife’s birthday, so Happy Birthday my sweet Tiffany. We have been married for about 2 and a half months now and I couldn’t be happier. On to less happy things.

It is the year 2003 and our country is going to hell. I am so tired of hearing about a possible war in Iraq for a different reason every week. First it is a regime change, then it weapons of mass destruction, then it is terrorism, then it is weapons of terror, then it over not disarming, then it is Iraq not disarming fast enough, then it human rights violations. All of which North Korea does in spades, but we are talking, or are we not talking to them? We are certainly not putting 300,000 troops on their border.

It is all a scam though. I don’t know the real reason we are invading one of the weakest countries on earth, but I do know it is a distraction for what is happening in the US. The economy is in the toilet, tax cuts will explode the deficit, gas is around 2 bucks a gallon, and all we talk about it some piss ass little country half a world away. We can talk all we want about terrorism, but the fact of the matter is, Iraq almost certainly had nothing to do with September 11th. There were NO Iraqi hijackers. The Iraq government or people did NOT fund the plot against us. They are NOT the problem. We need to focus on issues here at home. The US dollar is so weak now that jobs are being lost at a rate only last seen during the great depression. We need to do something meaningful, and it is not a tax cut or a pointless, expensive war.

Mr. Bush, our problems are on this side of the ocean. We need help now! We need solutions that work, and a government that does what the people need. What this administration says and what it does are two totally different things. Please, please, don’t drag us into another war when the problems in the US are mounting. If you are reading this and don’t believe me, think of how many people you know who have been laid off? Have you been laid off or are you worrying about your job, or even how you will pay your next heating bill? These are all signs there is something wrong, and it sure as hell isn’t Iraq!!! The price of gas is more than just a little more out of your paycheck. It effects everything you buy that is shipped. The more shipping costs, the more everything you buy costs. It is a nasty cycle that can be avoided. We are facing grave challenges in this country, and we have the least capable president in 80 years leading us. People may say he took charge when September 11th happened, but is Osama in custody? Are we any safer now? Is the duct tape going to protect us? Is Afghanistan in ruins and we are doing nothing to rebuild it? Answer these questions and provide us with economic solutions beyond the doomed Trickle down economics. It doesn’t work, it has never worked, and it won’t work now.

I haven’t had a raise in 3 years. I could only afford a small condo and see no chance of getting something better unless the economy picks up. Maybe I am greedy, but I want something better. There 90’s were only a few years ago, and I yearn for them now. Don’t think I will forget about these things when the next election comes around. I am sure millions of other Americans will remember as well, no matter how well the Gulf War II goes. Like father, like son, all I can hope for is another 4 year wonder. I will move to another country if Bush is appointed to office again. This time there will be more than 500,000 votes against him.

That is all,

David N.
