They say when you have a new baby, you buy a new car.  I guess that is true, since we bought a new car yesterday!  It is my first new car.  For my whole life, the “newest” car I have owned has been about 5 years old, and averaging about 10 to 15 years old.  Yep, I buy beaters.  Well, no more, bought a 2006 Hyundai Elantra, in electric red.  It’s a very nice car.  I can’t believe the build quality of Hyundai’s now.  I remember when they first came to America, they were Korean Yugos.  (Is that really possible?)  Now, they are rated above every other car brand, except for Lexus.  Needless to say, they cost a bit less than Lexuses.  So, I am happy about that.

Linux on a low end machine.

This blog is being typed from an old Pentium 200MMX with a whopping 40 megabytes of RAM!

I always wanted to get Linux running on an old compuer to see how it is, with the right distribution, it is not bad at all!
I decided to try Damn Small Linux, and installed to a small partition on the hard drive (less than 500MB).  It boots up in about 1.5 minutes to X.  The package manager is really top knotch.  Packages are downloaded and installed as needed.  Performance is pretty good, on par with Windows 98 for most tasks, and much better then Windows for video/audio playback.  So, if you want to bring life back to a machine built 8 to 10 years ago, give it a try.
In other news, saw an old, white guy with a long, grey beard, rapping in front of a White Castle  .  The things you see when you take a different route home.

Heartbeat

Heard our baby’s heartbeat for the first time 2 days ago!
It is really amazing, and really sinking in.  I wonder if everyone feels like this when thier first one is on the way.  I think it is an experience that really is part of being human and ties us all together.
In other news, if anyone is looking for a good movie to rent, I highly recommend Grizzly Man.  It is a documentary about Timothy Treadwell, the…kinda crazy guy who lived with Grizzly bears for years, until he was eaten by one in 2003.
Very interesting.
Work is going well.  Got a decent raise and just in time for the baby.  It is good to be appreciated.
