Computer is alive again

I had a hard drive fail on my computer (1 of 3).  It contained a good chunk of my operating system and my home directory.  Well, everything is back to normal now, and I have a new 160g drive, giving me just over a quarter terabyte of storage.  It did have trouble installing a newer version of Mandrake Linux, so I just put 9.1 back on there and it works fine.  Only 6 more days until we close on our new house.

Here I be

Sorry it has been a while since I wrote anything.  Life is busy as always.  Only 11 days until we move into our new house.  I am really looking forward to it.  Another thing I have been working on is a MAME arcade cabinet.  Now that I will finally have the space, I want to build a real arcade machine to run some of my favorite games from my childhood.  I will add a new section to Cyberphreak.com when I start really building the cabinet.  I have created some solid models on the computer, and have the emulator working well.  All I need now is some time and money and tools.

McDonalds Targeting the Young and Old

I went for a walk today during lunch, and walked past a McDonand’s.  The smell of the grease sickened me to no end, but I did notice one thing.  For every young person in there, there was just as many of the geriatric crowd.  I think it is sick getting everyone hooked on that food.  I was as a kid, and I am paying the price now.  I do not eat any fast food, and I am in the midst of losing weight.  Obesity in American (and the developed world) is at epidemic proportions, and no one seems to be doing anything about it.  Yeah, they stopped the super size at McDonalds, but, one typical meal there is 120% to 180% of your recommended daily caloric intake and over 300% of the fat you should be eating.  We need to save the young and the old from this menace.  It is more than just one chain, turn on the T.V. and all you see is food adds.  Everything from ‘bucket of love’ KFC, to Pizza Hut (I don’t know how they call that sauceless grease disc a pizza), to the dozens of other food chains advertising.  Will the madness ever stop?

Two Too many people using to incorrectly.

Quick english lesson for people writing on the web.  There is a version of the word to that means too many.  See, I just used it. Examples of how to use the fricken words to, too, and two.

To:  I went to the store.  <-Indicates direction Too:  I ate too much candy. <-used to indicate the excessive Too:  I want to go too.  <- used to indicate inclusion into a group Two:  There are two people standing on the corner.  <- the number 2 NEVER use to to indicate something is excessive. Is shows an ignorance of english useage.  Use too.  The extra o does not cost anything more to type and you avoid looking like an idiot.

Going to the Opera

It has been a long time since I used the Opera web browser.  I am a big supporter of open source, but I have always had a soft spot in my heart for that little browser from Norway.  I first tried opera back when it was version 2.0, must be 7 years ago now and I used it almost continuously until about a year ago.  Opera 5/6 for Linux were O.K., but very unstable and had poor plugin support.  I was intrigued to see Opera 7.5 beta 1 was out, so I tried it.  It is fast and slick and has very nicely done fonts.  The interface is a little too funky when you first open it, but I quickly changed that.  I will let you know how it works out.  Even as a beta, it is super stable so far, better than Mozilla.  One complaint though, it is trying to be something of a full communications center, which is fine, but I like the programs I have been using and I think I will continue using my old programs as well.
